Female pattern hair loss
In women, hereditary hair loss usually shows as a widening parting or general thinning on top, rather than bald patches. It often becomes more noticeable around the menopause.
Iron deficiency, thyroid problems, stress, childbirth and some medicines can also cause shedding, so it's worth seeing your GP for a blood test if you haven't already.

2% or 5%?
Women's minoxidil comes as a 2% solution used twice a day, or a 5% foam used once a day, such as Regaine for Women. FOLIGAIN also sells a 2% product for women. Once-daily foam is easier to stick with for many people.
Unwanted facial hair is an uncommon side effect, more likely at higher strengths. It usually settles if you stop.

Safety
Don't use minoxidil if you're pregnant, trying to conceive or breastfeeding. Stop and seek advice if you notice chest pain, a fast heartbeat, dizziness or swelling.
If your hair loss is sudden, patchy, comes with an itchy or sore scalp, or you feel unwell, see your GP or a pharmacist before starting any treatment.
